What will you do?

Our client is a daycare for children with a mental and / or physical disability. There is room for 71 children between the ages of 1 to 18 years. The children are divided into five different groups that are determined by their age and ability. There is daily care for the children and in addition educational and therapeutic lessons are given. The organization is around 40 minutes outside the city, it is advisable to use a rental car.

Within this internship physiotherapy and or nursing you will support the various therapies. For example, they have a room where they can offer physiotherapy treatments. The moment you take a minor in physiotherapy or nursing, you can support the dayworkers with the therapies. What will you do?

Our client is a Special Needs School for children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Because of this disorder, these children are unable to participate in the regular education system and can therefore go to this school. There are only a few schools throughout South Africa for children with FASD. The school currently has 3 classes with a total of 30 children. It is a 25 minute drive from the city center, you can use the bus system for this or you can take a rental car.

Within the position of Pedagogic intern you support the teachers in the daily course of events. The children have an underdeveloped brain and therefore need intensive help with performing assignments and tasks at school, you will assist them with this. You check the assignments and go through the feedback with them. You also maintain authority over the group when there are concentration problems and behavioral problems. Special programs are prepared for outside of school hours and during the school holidays in which you will be involved. Finally, there is always the possibility of research for new programs for the children, teachers or, for example, the (foster) parents of the children. Here you look at the needs of the children at that time and you respond to them in the right way.

What will you be doing?

Our client is an organization that takes care of clients with an eating disorder including Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder. The client works with both local and international clients and is known for their expertise in the field of eating disorders. Their team includes experienced psychologists, social workers, dietitians and more. The setting is a large villa with a great garden, swimming pool, gym and a view of Table Mountain!

Within the function of applied psychology intern you will mainly observe the first weeks of your internship, you will also be present at the clients’ meals and you will supervise after the meals. After your first few weeks you become more involved with the clients, they all follow their own path divided into different phases. Clients with severe underweight, for example, do individual activities / assignments in which you assist in the phase. Clients in their final phase of the program will support you in drawing up work schedules and activities, and you will also go shopping for clothing and groceries with them. Group outings are organized on Saturdays that you also support, then you get a weekday off to compensate for this.
